It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. Changing the kitty box is no longer a huge chore. I have two cats and need to change the receptacle every 2 or 3 days. My only complaint is that it does leave smaller clumps in the box, but it's not that big of a deal. The instructions recommend using a premium clumping litter, but don't use one that clumps too hard. I had to have my first one replaced because the litter would clump too hard for the rake to get through it and it burned up the motor. I recommend using Tidy Cat clumping litter. 0 of 0 found this review helpful: Great!, 2008-07-14 I love this thing! I have 2 fat cats and a kitten and it's big enough for everybody. The little ramp is kind of a joke. The cats use it to get into the litter box but then they just jump over the sides to get out. i suggest getting a large mat to go around it. The last littermaid i had was the smaller one (LM500) and the little motor burned out on it pretty quickly (within a year) so i'm just hoping the motor on this one lasts longer... Also, this litter box doesn't stall out like the smaller one did if it hits something big (like a cat toy). it just pushes through! So far, i don't have any problems! 0 of 0 found this review helpful: Littermaid 900, 2008-07-14 I have TOO MANY cats and over the past 4 years, I have used all the sizes of littermaid and this is the best one. It's the largest and the quietest. I still clean out the litter trays twice a day , but unless you have a cat with a stomach or intestinal problem that causes you to have to do extra cleaning, this is efficient and keeps the litter cleaned out very well. 0 of 0 found this review helpful: Get's the job done, 2008-07-13 It isn't perfect but not much is. It works well I've found you want 1 for every 2 or 3 cats. It's best when you put litter in it you'll see 2 lines min and max I fill mine to min i find when i fill it to max it jams constantly. if you have 5 cats and only 1 littermaid it can't keep up and gets kinda messy. as long as you keep the litter to the min line and keep container emptied which i reuse and switch every 2 to 3 months you'll probably be happy with it. 1 of 1 found this review helpful: Love the LitterMaid Mega , 2008-07-08 We have two cats and have used the old LitterMaid Mega (with the plastic rake) for about five years. A few weeks ago we put a little too much litter in the box and the wire that follows the rake finally snapped, I read a bunch of reviews online about the new littermaid's with the metal rakes and decided against getting one - my mom also had one it seemed to smell up their spare bathroom more than the older model she had. Anyway so I was excited to find the old model brand new on amazon and immediately ordered it. It just came in today and our household couldn't be any happier, living without it for over 2 weeks was unpleasant to say the least. When I turned it on I noticed the wire didn't completely retract when the rake returned 'home' but I turned it off and on again and the second time it was fine. I'll keep on eye on it but worst case I'll call LitterMaid and they'll replace it - can't remember the exact problem we had with the first maid we bought but we had to return it in two weeks. No worries, their customer service is excellent and second one they sent us lasted 5 years and probably would have lasted longer if we had been more careful about not making the litter levels so high. In short this is a great product that makes your life easier - it does require some cleaning but nowhere near what a normal litterbox does. A note on the litter - I see a lot of people saying that litter is very expensive for this product and I'm not really sure what that's all about - an employee at PetsMart recommended the ExquisiCat extra strength cat litter (comes in a pink and green bag) when we first got the littermaid because it is 99.9% dust free which helps keeps the sensors clean and that's all we ever used, works like a charm! We get the 40 lb bag for about $5.00 and it lasts 2-3 months! I was amazed at how much money the LitterMaid saved me in litter costs when I first purchased it in 2003, it pays for itself. Truly a great product if you take care reasonable care of it - clean it out every week or every other week and be careful about not putting too much litter in so the rake doesn't have to constantly move back and forth because it's jammed.
